1. Start Hardy Herbs Indoors

  • Begin seeding perennial herbs like thyme, oregano, and sage indoors.

  • Use a well-draining seed-starting mix and provide sufficient light.

  • Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged for successful germination.

I like to start seeds every week, it is easy to get overwhelmed when starting seeds but by doing a few different varieties every week it is much easier to manage.

2. Prune Trees and Shrubs

  • Now is a great time to prune dormant fruit trees and ornamental shrubs.

  • Remove dead or diseased branches to encourage healthy spring growth.

  • Shape plants to improve airflow and light penetration.

3. Clean and Organize Your Greenhouse or Grow Space

  • Disinfect pots, trays, and shelves to prevent disease.

  • Ensure grow lights and heat mats are in good working order.

  • Organize seeds and planting tools for easy access.

4. Inspect and Repair Garden Infrastructure

  • Check fences, raised beds, and garden paths for winter damage.

  • Fix trellises and support structures before planting begins.

  • Clear any debris from pathways to create a tidy growing space.

5. Test Germination Rates

  • If you have older seed packets, test their viability before planting.

  • Place a few seeds in a damp paper towel and monitor germination.

  • Replace any seeds that show poor germination rates.

By tackling these tasks now, you’ll be setting yourself up for a thriving and productive garden season.
